David Baum

David Baum is an experienced general partner with 31 years in the information technology industry, including twenty one years in technology finance and ten years in entrepreneurial operating management roles.

As an entrepreneur, David founded two companies including Pensoft Corporation, a venture-backed (Mohr Davidow, IVP, and Bay Partners) mobile communications company that was sold to AT&T in 1994.

David was a key principal that raised, launched, staffed, and managed Prism Ventures. During his tenure at Prism, the firm grew from zero to over $1.25B under management. Investments include Softricity (Microsoft), Network24 Communications (Akamai), DotBank (Yahoo), Altaworks (Opnet), Integral Access (Telco Systems), Syncra Systems (Retek), Salesnet (RightNow) and Bitfone (HP).

In January of 2006, David launched Stage 1 Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm. In June of 2010, David launched Stage 1 Growth Fund, LLC, a later stage secondary/growth equity investment vehicle. S1GF made its first investment into YMAX, Corp, a leading CLEC/VOIP provider in North America and creators of the MagicJack-branded consumer service offering. YMAX went public later in 2010 by purchasing VocalTec, a leading softswitch provider.

David holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School with second year honors and BS in Computer Science from Drexel University where he graduated first in his science class.

He currently serves as Executive Chairman of two Boston-based venture funded startups inStream Global and Shop Advisor. inStream Global is a personalized digital marketing company working with leading retailers in the value channel and major brand advertisers. Shop Advisor is a mobile marketing and analytics venture working with leading publishers and major brand advertisers. Previously, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) – a venture funded by many of the largest retailers in the United States – where he launched a mobile wallet to enable payments and access to coupons, offers and loyalty programs. Prior to that, he was Managing Director at Barclays where he launched a merchant friendly mobile wallet that was the first cloud-based program that included payment and highly tailored offers to small merchants.

Early in his career, Davidson launched Sprint’s wireless business in the 6-state New England market. He subsequently was President at Rogers Communications where he led a turnaround of Canada’s largest mobile operator.

He graduated from Harvard Business School and was a Visiting Instructor at Harvard shortly after his graduation. He has served as a Trustee of his alma mater, St. Lawrence University and on the Board of Overseers at Colby College. He is currently a board member of the Kenya Education Fund. Dekkers and his wife, Barbara reside in Belmont, Massachusetts.
